Caveman

Hunt! Invent! Survive!

Welcome! This little section of my site is dedicated to my (as-yet-unreleased) RPG, Caveman: Hunt! Invent! Survive!. Thus far, there really isn't a lot to see, apart from some resources:

When I decided to write this game, it wasn't because I thought there weren't enough RPGs out there. No, it was because I'm cheap. And lazy. The first game I ran as a GM, I spent months designing NPCs, weapons, and exotic landscapes. And it wasn't even a complicated game! Now, that was fun, but sometimes what I really want to do is just sit down and play. Thus, lazy. And I didn't want to give someone else piles of money just to use their pre-planned game, either. Cheap, see?

I wanted a game that was ready to play with minimal planning; a game that didn't have a million extras you had to buy. So, I started making my own. I took the rules of other RPGs and ripped out the complicated parts: pages of tables, overly-complicated rules, even multiplication were all too complex for my taste. I stripped everything down to the absolute basics of gaming: A tiny handful of rules, based on small numbers and basic addition. Of course, a tiny set of rules on its own is pretty useless. It needed more than that - it needed a story. And every story starts with a setting - a genre. But what genre should I choose? Space ships? Pirates? Zombies? All fun, but the item lists are crazy long. Writing those lists down is exactly what I didn't want to do (laziness again!). That's when it hit me; if nothing has been invented, inventory lists are easy, right? When had nothing been invented? At the dawn of mankind, of course! The Stoneage! A few sticks, rocks, bones, and presto! Done! Instead of entire books of items, the starting inventory list is only a single page!

And that, my friends, is what Caveman is all about: fast, fun, and so easy to learn it is most definitely ridiculous. Once everyone understands the simple rules for creating a character, it takes about ten minutes (filled with lots of grunting as people try to decide on a name) to fill in the character sheet. And if you can think on your feet, that's more than enough time to flesh out a whole story!

Even better, if you (like me) are too lazy to write your own story (or character sheet!), I've already built some. So what are you waiting for? Make a caveperson, and start grunting! Oh, and check out the sidebar for some links.

Eagerly anticipating the final release of Caveman: Hunt! Invent! Survive!? Well, wait... a little while longer. But not much longer! I won't give an exact date, as this is new territory for me, but within the next few weeks, expect to see Caveman go live! I'm still working out pricing for the final draft, and I'm learning Scribus along the way. It's not too bad, just time consuming.

And yes, I will be selling it. It was a long, difficult decision, but I finally came to the conclusion that a few bucks and free advertising sounded pretty good. Don't worry, I'm not going to be charging an arm and a leg - I don't want to run you off. However, there is an awesome added bonus: it will be released as a real book! That's right, a real, honest-to-goodness, softcover book. Is that awesome, or what?!
